The temporary revisions of the original Voting Rights Act of 1965 have been renewed four times: in 1970, 1975, 1982, and 2006. In 1982, congress voted to make some of the temporary provisions permanent, including section 2, a blanket statement prohibiting any sort of practice that results in voter discrimination regardless of intention. All other temporary provisions were extended for 25 years, to be expired on July 1, 2007. Congress therefore acted to renew this law a year in advance of its technical expiration. One House amendment attempted to limit this extension to 10 years, but failed on the floor.
